Andrew Bruce

Andrew has been a member of APIA since 2004 and joined the Board in 2009.

Andrew’s interest in property steams back to his university days where he qualified as a valuer gaining a BCom in Valuation and Property Management from Lincoln University. Subsequent to graduating he spent a year and a half playing and coaching tennis professionally in Germany before commencing a career within the property industry. Currently he splits his time between his own project management company and working on projects within his property portfolio.

Outside of property Andrew’s other interests include tennis, golf, general fitness, completing the Taupo Ironman in 2004 and adventure travel including cycling around various parts of Asia plus an epic cycle journey of 1200km from Lhasa in Tibet to Kathmandu which included cycling up to Everest base camp.

Peter Lewis

Peter has been a residential landlord since 1991. Starting out with one Auckland house he has steadily increased his portfolio over subsequent years. He has always fully managed his own properties. He has sold down other business interests to concentrate fully on his landlording activities. Peter was named the runner-up to the NZPIF 2015 Landlord Of the Year.   

He has a special interest in the economic, social and political environment in which the landlording business operates. To this end he has commented through and appeared in the media on such subjects as insulation subsidies, water charges and tax matters. He is the author of the monthly blog ‘Life as a Landlord’ in the forum.

Extensive travel throughout the Pacific Islands and Asia have given Peter an insight into the needs and social mores of tenants from these countries.

With a lifelong interest in aviation history, he is a licenced pilot and a published author and photographer within the New Zealand aviation scene. Compiler of a comprehensive database on such matters and with well over 120,000 relevant photographs, he frequently supplies material on a commercial basis to magazines, books and company histories.

John Priest BMS, PGD (Business)


John Priest

John is a long term property investor.  He bought his first investment property in 1992 and now has a mixed portfolio of commercial and residential properties.
He has a bachelor of management studies from the University of Waikato and a post graduate diploma in business from the University of Auckland.  He is a member of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand and is accredited in public relations by the institute.

He gained an extensive understanding of the building and construction industry during a 20 year management career working for major companies such as: Winstone Group, Wilkins & Davies Construction, James Hardie Building Products, Golden Bay Cement and Firth Industries. His main area of business expertise is marketing.

After he left the corporate world John had his own mortgage broking business for six years.  He sold the mortgage broking business and intended to retire, but as a result of his strong interest in politics he spent almost three years working in the electorate office of a senior Member of Parliament and Government Minister.
John has been a full time investor since 2009.  Aside from property, his interests include history, politics, fitness and travel.  He is secretary of the Arlberg Ski Club and is a member of Toastmasters.

Amanda Watt BCom, BSc, PG Dip Mgmt Studies, MTaxS (Hons), and CA


Amanda Watt

Amanda is an Principal with WHK based in Auckland CBD. With over 15 years experience as a Business Advisor and Chartered Accountant Amanda advises and works with many clients from a wide variety of industries with specific interest in property, construction, manufacturing, advertising and professional services.

Amanda works alongside clients to guide and help them to successfully develop and implement strategies that suit the goals of the business.

For Amanda, it’s all about achieving client goals and aspirations. This includes the basics of ensuring their accounts and tax structures are accurate to the more complex and long term goals in ensuring their strategy is correct and relevant for the direction of their business.

Amanda is actively involved with ABEL, the Professional Accounting School arm of NZICA where she acts as facilitator and marker.

Amanda was a member of Youthline for many years and was on the management team of Youthline for two years.

Amanda person passionate is property and she is a keen investor herself. Amanda is married with a young son. She enjoys travelling, vintage champagne and spending time with her family.

Amanda is very enthusiastic about being a Board member of APIA and working to build the membership of the association.

Andrew King

Andrew saved for and purchased his first home plus an investment property by the age of 24. He completed a Diploma in Business Studies at Massey University, developing an interest in Strategic Business Planning. This experience has been carried over to Property Investment and a belief that all Property Investors should develop their own Property Business Plan. This is especially true with the current changes occurring within the investment property market.
Andrew developed the Auckland Landlord newsletter in 1996, which provided current and independent information to Auckland Property Investors. The newsletter grew into the national publication, Residential Property Investor Magazine, which he sold in 2002.

Andrew was board member of the Auckland Property Investors' Association from 1997 to 2008, being President for eight and Treasurer for one of those years. Under his direction, APIA was the only association in New Zealand to increase membership number by more than 10% each year for the slump period between 1998 and 2001, then achieved around 30% growth in membership numbers between 2002 and 2005.

He has spoken at property investment seminars, written for several magazines and newspapers. He has frequently appeared on television programmes and documentaries and is often sought by radio stations to share his knowledge on property investment matters.

Andrew believes that it is preferable that anyone providing training or information in this area should remain independent. Andrew believes that Association grow when the focus is on the memberships' needs.

Sonny Lemalu BSc, MCSE, CCIE

Sonny Lemalu Sonny has been an APIA casual guest since 2003 and became a member in 2008 joining the Board in 2011.  He is an independent director of a telecommunication and water bottle company in the pacific islands. He is also a member of the New Zealand Computer Society

Sonny owns an IT Company serving the corporate enterprise market and government organisations both New Zealand and the pacific, and a shareholder in various businesses. He graduated with a BSc degree double major in operations research and financial modeling from Auckland University. His passion for technology took him to become both a Microsoft System Engineer (MCSE) and Cisco Design Expert (CCDE

Sonny became an accidental property investor when he was searching for a place to rent in Wellington during the recession in the late 90's. He was on his way to work when he saw a bungalow with a big back yard. The landlord suggested that he could purchase it on a lease to buy option, which he did and the rest is history. It's from this experience that he saw the world of property investing from a different perspective.

Sonny is passionate about property and a keen investor with an investment portfolio consists of both residential and commercial. He enjoys the strategic and creativity side of both business and property investing and the challenge of taking an asset and adding value to it. He is also enthusiastic about passing on his knowledge and skills to assist new and young investor's whenever he can.

Sonny is enthusiastic about APIA and a true believer as an independent organisation. He believes APIA is the preferred organisation for members to collaborate, network and learn about property investment. We are living in a globalised world with information technology the forefront of that change and Sonny believes APIA need to stay current and relevant by providing value added offerings for it's members through innovation by adopting new and current technologies and by focusing on members needs.   

Outside of work, Sonny enjoys spending time with his family and 3-year-old daughter. He loves general fitness especially that feeling after your lungs have been given a good old thumping from an intense workout which helps clear the head. Enjoy reading autobiographies and non-fiction. Paddling in a single canoe in big swells and surfing the waves.

Rebecca Bartlett Registered Legal Executive

Rebecca Bartlett

Rebecca has worked in property law for over 16 years at some of NZ’s top law firms, handling predominantly conveyancing and re-financing work for home buyers, investors and developers.  She also has considerable experience in acting for clients on construction contracts, retirement village work (both acting for the Village and on the other side acting for the individual resident), estate administration, trust work and gifting (before it was abolished).  She has spent five years living in the UK, where she also worked in property law, adapting to the UK system of conveyancing and ‘exchanging contracts’ which she describes as a lot more stressful for both buyer and seller – and a lot more exciting for the lawyers!  She currently works at Hesketh Henry in the property team, which she loves.
Outside of work, Rebecca has been investing herself since 2013, when she joined and immediately became a very active member of APIA, going to nearly all evening seminars in that first year, making the most of the incredible education on offer and abundance of networking opportunities with like minded people who share her love of all things property.  It was from this experience and newfound passion that Rebecca was keen to get even more involved and join the Board where she aims to provide a voice for those less experienced investors.
Rebecca has completed a lot of personal development work and is a strong advocate of the benefits of putting time and energy into this.  She has previously been a telephone counsellor and also a mentor for junior counsellors at Youthline for a number of years.  She loves fitness being a keen and loyal Les Mills member for many years.  She is well travelled and also belongs to Toastmasters.
